E-Bikes and E-Scooters – Know the Law and Stay Safe

With half term approaching and Christmas just around the corner, many parents may be starting to think about festive gifts. E-scooters and e-bikes have become increasingly popular in recent years and are widely available both in stores and online. However, it’s important to be aware of the laws and safety considerations before purchasing these items for children or young people.

Did you know?

In Wales, it is illegal to ride a privately owned electric scooter (e-scooter) in any public place, including roads, pavements, parks, and cycle paths. E-scooters can only be used on private land with the landowner’s permission. Using them illegally could result in the scooter being seized by the police.

There is also a lot of confusion around e-bikes. While legal to use, they must meet specific requirements to be classed as an Electrically Assisted Pedal Cycle (EAPC). Riders must be at least 14 years old, and the motor must not exceed 250 watts or assist the rider beyond 15.5mph. If these conditions aren’t met, the bike is legally considered a motor vehicle and requires a licence, insurance, and registration.

In addition to legal considerations, charging and storing these vehicles safely is essential. The leaflet includes important fire safety advice from the National Fire Chiefs Council to help prevent battery-related fires in the home.
