Religious Education

Religious Education is the "core of the core curriculum" in a Catholic school (Pope St John Paul II).

Placing RE at the core of the curriculum in Catholic schools helps the school to fulfil its mission to educate the whole person in discerning the meaning of their existence, since "Religious Education is concerned not only with intellectual knowledge but also includes emotional and affective learning. It is in the mystery of the Word made flesh that the mystery of what it is to be human truly becomes clear. Without religious education, pupils would be deprived of an essential element of their formation and personal development, which helps them attain a vital harmony between faith and culture." (Religious Education Curriculum Directory p4).

Our Lady of the Angels School strives to develop pupils who are religiously literate and engaged young people who have the knowledge, understanding and skills to reflect spiritually, and think ethically and theologically, and who are aware of the demands of religious commitment in everyday life

As a school we are We are currently in a transitional phase of enabling staff to move away from the ‘Come and See’ programme, as adopted by the Archdioceses of Cardiff previously, to the RED compliant resource ‘In God’s Name’ (by Dr. Margaret Carswell).

In God’s Name covers the mandated content for all pupils in Catholic Schools in England and Wales and is expressed in End of Phase Outcomes for pupils aged 5-7, 7-9 and 9-11. These outcomes synthesise both the content from the four knowledge lenses and the Ways of Knowing from the RED 2023.

Teachers in all year groups will plan and resource content together. The programme follows the Liturgical Years closely and pupils will have a strong sense of the school’s curriculum links with the Church.
