Smartphone Free Childhood

Please see the below links to Smartphone Free Childhood Campaign, where you will find all helpful information on the negative and potentially harmful impact of smartphone use on children and young people and sign up to the Parent Pact. The campaign understands the difficulties parents face in the demand for these devices, and how hard it is when their child's classmates are given smartphones and it feels that this is "just how things are now"

The Government are taking too long to legislate smartphone/social media use for under 16s, yet all the statistics and research point to how harmful and addictive this is.  The SFC campaign details the increase between children physically playing less and instead spending more time on these devices, potentially making themselves vulnerable to bullying, eating disorders and predators, disturbing sleep patterns and the detrimental impact on their mental health.

The campaign founders understand the complex situation parents and carers face, and stress its not about being "anti tech, but pro childhood". The website provides support and alternative options to giving a smartphone, such as a basic phone, Bluetooth trackers or airtags for location sharing, and the Xplorer range of smartwatches, available at EE and most mobile phone providers. These are controlled by parents via an app on their device, children can make calls and send voice notes and their location is available.

The Parent Pact is also where parents can sign to delay giving a smartphone until 14. There is also a plan to provide a local OLA grassroots group for parents who wish for further support with this and sharing the message.
