Benefits of Learning Welsh

4.9.2019
Annwyl Parents,
Here at Our Lady's we really want our pupils to be bilingual and hopefully trilingual before they leave us for secondary school. The benefits of learning Welsh are extensive and important, here are just some of the benefits.

1. Being bilingual (Welsh) is a massive benefit in the Welsh jobs market with Wales becoming more and more bilingual. This is only going to increase as we move forward.

2. There are also educational benefits in learning two languages, with research showing that it helps develop cognitive skills.

3. Pupils find it easier to learn other foreign languages as they get older, due to their early grounding in two languages.

4. Children also learn about, and become a part of, the country's culture, e.g. Eisteddfodau, Urdd competitions.

Please ensure you encourage your child with regards to learning Welsh. It is a subject that you can learn alongside your child. Feel free to ask me about Welsh vocabulary, look on the Torfaen CBC website for Welsh Learner classes and have a watch at some of the Welsh 2nd Language videos on the BBC Learn website.

Hwyl fawr,
Mr James
