Sadly, 54 people lost their lives to drowning in Wales in 2024 – an increase from the previous year. Many of these tragedies happened during the winter months. We want to work together to keep our children and families safe.
Winter brings extra risks around water, including icy surfaces, flooding, and slippery banks. Please take a moment to read these simple but life-saving tips from Water Safety Wales:
Stay Away from the Edge
Keep back from slippery banks and avoid walking on ice. Stick to well-lit areas and plan walks during daylight. Never walk or drive through floodwater.
Keep Children and Pets Close
Teach children to stay off the ice and away from floodwater. Keep dogs on a lead near ice and slippery banks.
If You Fall Through Ice
Stay calm and call for help. Float on your back until you feel calm, then try to climb out. If you cannot climb out, keep floating and keep your head above water.
If You See Someone in Trouble – Call 999
Do not enter cold water, ice, or floodwater to rescue someone. Use a rope, pole, tree branch, or clothing tied together from the bank if possible.
